Project 2. Closure of open dump site
Project 3. Design and construction of transfer station Project 4. Design and construction of landfill
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECTS
PROJECT 1.
The city government has an open dump site covering 37 Hectares of land with a waste amount 14.56 million m3. This dump site has served for the past 42 years without any treatment of solid waste and leach ate water. The waste dumped in this site is not sorted. All house hold, industrial and hospital waste were damped here. The city government is looking for companies potentially enough to convert this amount of waste into energy. In this project the company is expected to suggest possible options of converting the waste in to usable form along with the cost for each option.
The current organization structure for solid waste management is described as follows.
Activity | Responsible Organization | Ownership |
Collection | Small scale enterprise | Small scale Enterprise |
Transportation | Sanitation agency | Addis Ababa City Government |
Disposal | Reuse and disposal project office | Addis Ababa City Government |
In addition to the above, companies are expected to suggest their interest in the right of land use after methane collection system is in place and landscaping is done and the responsibility of methane content analysis.
PROJECT 2.
The open damp site described in project one has to be closed will in the time interval of 2010 and middle of 2011. Till then the city government has no other site to dump the city waste. Therefore The City Government of Addis Ababa needs a company involved in preparing dumping site for 1 year and closing the other part. The city generates 3000m3 waste per day and current situation is full. It is a serious problem to have a dumpsite if some mitigation has not been taken. The waste in the dumpsite is nearly 20m depth and 10m above the ground. In this project the scheme in which closure is undertaken while using the other part for dumping should be clearly stated.
PROJECT 3. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF TRANSFERSTATIONS
The city government is planning to build 4 transfer stations in order to compact wastes coming from different areas to be transferred to landfill. Since the landfill site is somewhere 30km out of the city the waste has to be compacted and loaded on long fleet to land fill site in order to avoid traveling long distance with small weight using normal 8m3capacity vehicles. Therefore the city government is looking for companies having good experience in designing and constructing transfer station expecting various options. The transfer stations are located at different part of the city in order to suit the interest of sub cities and neighboring Oromia regions towns.
PROJECT 4. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF LANDFILL
The city government of Addis Ababa is planning to build a sanitary landfill 30km away from Addis Ababa. It is located around Sendafa town; the total area of selected land for this landfill site is 140 hectares. The city government has made geological, Hydrological and physiological study and found to be feasible. However, The City Government looks for companies with adequate experience in designing landfill and its construction with various options.
The city government is also looking for companies to suggest their interest and possible options of the scope of contract.
Land fill methane collection management
Land fill methane collection and use
Land fill Operation contract with private companies
Land fill Operation contract validity period.
Land fill flaring verses power generation
